Dear Business Students,
On behalf of the CSUN Iota Upsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, I invite you to explore our site and learn about the impact we have on our society, our brothers, and on ourselves.
As business students, we recognize the importance of preparing for life after college and plan a variety of professional development activities throughout the semester including resume building, mock interviewing practice, networking capabilities, and providing external business contacts. Our Chapters main element is to help and encourage our brothers to explore potential career opportunities and prepare them for their professional life after college.
While we strive to develop ourselves professionally, we also dedicated to helping the community throughout the year. Some examples of our community services include building homes for the Habitat for Humanity program; painting murals and making renovations for an elementary school; reading to grade school children; volunteering at a homeless shelter; planting trees in local parks; and supporting military troops though the Operation Gratitude program.
In addition to the professional and service components of our organization, the brotherhood of Delta Sigma Pi is unparalleled. We also pride ourselves in maintaining a diverse chapter. Our general body of members is well balanced in ethnicity, a wide age range, level of experience, and personality all which makes our chapter and its members strong in character and spirit. We often take classes together as business majors, go on various adventurous trips, and maintain lasting valuable friendships after graduation. The strength of our brotherhood is evidenced by our strong alumni base, which continues to give support and encouragement to the current members by offering mentorship and advice.
Delta Sigma Pi is not just a typical Greek organization. Its an opportunity for students to develop as professionals, build on personal networking and a place for individual growth. If you have any questions about our events or about joining our organization, please feel free to contact me or other Brothers. We look forward to meeting you soon!

Delta Sigma Pi is a professional fraternity organized to foster the study of business in universities; to encourage scholarship, social activity and the association of students for their mutual advancement by research and practice; to promote closer affiliation between the commercial world and students of commerce; and to further a higher standard of commercial ethics and culture and the civic and commercial welfare of the community.
Delta Sigma Pi was founded in 1907 at New York University School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance by Harold Valentine Jacobs, Alexander Frank Makay, Alfred Moysello and Henry Albert Tienken. Today, Delta Sigma Pi has over 300 collegiate and alumni chapters and over 226,000 members around the world.
Professional: For more than 100 years, Delta Sigma Pi has encouraged, supported, and shaped the professional goals and personal aspirations of thousands of members. It is the foremost professional fraternity for men and women pursuing business careers.
Service: Delta Sigma Pi is dedicated to making a difference, because business has both a unique opportunity and a compelling duty to contribute to the larger community. Frequent involvement in the community instills deep feelings of brotherhood while developing business skills.
Scholarship: Delta Sigma Pi funds educational programs through the Delta Sigma Pi Leadership Foundation, which provides financial assistance for scholarships, leadership development and training, and personal and professional improvement. Funded by individual and corporate contributions, the Leadership Foundation offers many levels of participation.
Social: Delta Sigma Pi facilitates social activity among students, the community, and business organizations. The network of members around the world provides a wealth of business resources, professional contacts, continuing education opportunities, and community support to even the newest business graduate.
It was in the autumn of 1906 that the history of Delta Sigma Pi began. Life was much different then as there were only 46 states and the major method of transportation was by train. The airplane was flown for the first time only a few years earlier. The automobile was still a toy for the well-to-do; there were no talking movies; radio was very new and most homes were without a telephone. It was a time after what is termed the Industrial Revolution and before the times of world wars, the Great Depression and the Age of Consumerism.
In the academic world at that time, the formation of schools of business was relatively new. There were only a handful of such schools in the United States in 1906 and one such school, known as the School of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance existed at New York University. There were approximately 300 students in attendance at this school at that time, including 70 freshmen representing the Class of 1909. Four members of that Class of 1909, previously unknown to each other, soon were to start an association that would become what is known today as the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi.
These four young men met in their classes and were drawn closer together as they shared the same subway route on their way home every evening. Occasionally, other classmates came along, but the four were regularly together and it was this time together that gave them the opportunity to get to know one another, to become friends, and to discuss topics of mutual interest.
One such topic was school affairs, and the domination of one organization on campus. In the opinion of these four men, the overwhelming majority of students at New York University were ignored by this organization and, as a result, restricted from membership. These four, Alexander F. Makay, Alfred Moysello, H. Albert Tienken, and Harold V. Jacobs, decided they should do something for the benefit of the student body at large. They decided to form a club that would be open to all business students.
During that first year in school these four young men were occasionally accompanied by a fifth student who, in the spring of 1907, dropped from the group to accept the pledge of the only fraternity in the School of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance. It was at this time, and perhaps because of this incident, that they felt there was a need for two fraternities in the school, and they approached their fellow students this time with the idea of joining a fraternity. The response to their idea was very positive and, somewhat to their dismay, they found students who wanted to be initiated immediately into the proposed fraternity which was not yet organized.
Makay and Jacobs had been members of high school fraternities so they were assigned the duty of drafting a Constitution, Bylaws, and a Ritual. The Constitution was finally drafted and adopted in the fall of 1907, yet the selection of a name for the Fraternity was not completed. Nevertheless, these four men proceeded with the next major order of business which was the election of officers. Makay was elected the first president, and Jacobs and Moysello were elected treasurer and secretary, respectively. They first approached their Class of 1909 classmates and, in short order, initiated several new members. They immediately began to recruit the Class of 1910 from which they initiated several more members. And from there the Fraternity grew.
Today the Fraternity stretches from coast to coast and across 47 countries to link more than 258 chapters and over 220,000 Brothers who support the goals and ideals of professionalism, ethics, and servitude. In many aspects, Delta Sigma Pi has established itself as one of the most prestigious and well-respected business organizations in the United States, and especially at USC. The personal and professional aspirations of many thousands have been shaped and supported by Brothers who choose to make the Fraternity an integral part of their college experience.
The Iota Upsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi is an organization under the College of Business and Economics at California State University Northridge. Established in 1980, Iota Upsilon is CSUNs first and largest professional business Fraternity with over 550 initiate Brothers. Without the following individuals, the Iota Upsilon founding class, our chapter would not be here today.

Commitment to a Diverse Brotherhood
Founded from Diversity: Delta Sigma Pi was founded over a hundred years ago to be Americas preeminent professional business fraternity. Part of that founding was to form a brotherhood of people from diverse walks of life, at a time when other organizations excluded certain groups from membership. A great strength of our Fraternity is a membership as diverse as the business world, for which we are preparing our members. We are a mixture of different voices from different backgrounds that challenge fixed ways of thinking and lead us to excellent ideas at both the chapter level and in the business world.
A Diverse Fraternity: Delta Sigma Pi is a diverse brotherhood. We were the first professional business fraternity to go co-ed, admitting women in 1975. We welcome into our membership students of business who meet professional standards of admission, and our policies allow no exclusions based on race, ethnicity, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.
Diversity Ideals into Action: Delta Sigma Pi puts its commitment to a diverse brotherhood into action, going beyond a non-discrimination policy, and extends a Welcome to those of all walks of life who meet our professional standards. Every one of us is an individual with different abilities to offer, and we seek out and honor those differences. Delta Sigma Pi strives to provide fraternal friendships with people different than ourselves, giving that feeling of bonding that a fraternity of people with similar goals can uniquely give.

February 13-15, 2012 Panel Interview - Professional Attire (By Invitation Only)
1. What is recruitment week?
Every fraternity or sorority usually has a week or so of events that make up Recruitment week. The purpose of these events are to attract potential candidates for membership into that organization. Recruitment events are a great way for you to learn about an organization and to evaluate whether or not it is for you. At the end of recruitment week, bids are given out to some candidates as an invitation to pledge for the organization.
2. How do I decide if an organization is right for me?
People dont just join organizations, people join people. The best way for you to evaluate if an organization is right for you are the people already in the organization. Join an organization where you feel comfortable with the people. After all, these are the people you will be spending a lot of time with the rest of your college career. In addition, join an organization where you feel you can grow in. Consider organizations that can challenge you to become a better person, broaden your horizons and help you make the most of your college career.
3. What is the purpose of Delta Sigma Pi and why should I join?
Delta Sigma Pi is a professional fraternity that offers learning experiences beyond the classroom. As a member, you will be introduced to various professional events featuring speakers and educators from various topics and industries. These events provide the invaluable opportunity to building a career network in addition to developing skills that are pertinent to succeeding in the business world. The beauty of DSP is that it is a close-knit group of motivated individuals with common interests and goals who are always willing to help one another out.
4. What is the process of membership into Delta Sigma Pi?
Recruitment Week: This is where you decide whether or not you want to apply to Delta Sigma Pi. At the end of Recruitment Week, all applicants will be contacted and told whether they have been accepted as a pledge or not. Compare this week to pre-interview nights, information nights and dinners companies offer applicants before interviews.
Pledge Process: Once accepted as a pledge, the fraternity will then evaluate whether or not the pledge will be accepted as a full member of the fraternity. This evaluation process will last 7-8 weeks where the pledge class will be given requirements to fulfill. At the end of the pledge process, pledges will be told whether or not they have crossed into the fraternity. Compare this to an internship program of a company.
Collegiate Status: Once a pledge has crossed into the fraternity, they are a full member and will be regarded as a Delta Sigma Pi brother. Compare this to an associate position at a company.
5. What is the process of membership into Delta Sigma Pi?
Attending a recruiting event can be stressful, especially when you have no idea what is going to happen. Here are some tips for an enjoyable recruiting event.
First: Approach the recruiting event with an open mind.
This will enable you to fully evaluate an organization objectively and without misconceptions. Beware of rumors because they will hinder your recruitment week experience.
Second: Ask many questions. Asking questions not only allows you to understand the organization better, but also lets the members know that you are an interested individual who is serious about joining. In addition, try researching the organization first so that you can ask intelligent questions.
Third: Meet as many brothers as you can. Dont be shy. The brothers are there to help you feel welcome. Getting to know all the brothers is a great way for you to evaluate whether or not this organization is right for you. Also, making an effort to meet all the brothers shows that you are enthusiastic about joining the organization which is always a plus.
Fourth: Be Yourself. The golden rule of life applies to Recruitment Week also. This is ultimately the best way for you to see whether or not an organization is right for you.
6. Can I apply for Delta Sigma Pi again if I am not accepted?
Of course. Just because you are not accepted the first time does not mean that you cannot try again. Many times, individuals are not familiar with the recruiting process so they could not show their full potential to the fraternity. Recruiting for additional times allows you to be familiar with the process so that you can show your full potential. Recruiting for additional times also shows that you are extremely enthusiastic about joining.
